This section will be developed soon to include current and past club personalities. For the moment we have listed players who have achieved listed Provincial or International status as listed in the publication ’75 Years of Cricket in the Heathcote Valley’.
Club RepresentativesTroels Nielsen – International cricketer who represented Denmark and captained that country in a World Cup side, making him the topmost performer ever to have played for Heathcote. Troels brought a laconic, mustachioed, Viking style to the Club and captained various grades, and was still able to display his all-round skills until a recurring back problem curbed his bowling. Ken Lomax – Played English County cricket for Lancashire B alongside Trevor Chappel and against the likes of Joel Garner and Rohan Kanhai. Ken became Heathcote’s Club Captain and the Senior captain and gave us an example of wicket keeping never before seen in the Club. An expansive, rubicund and gentle man complete with a charming accent. He retired some years ago, after playing down the grades for a while when in the twilight zone but maintains Club contact. Kit Chambers – Represented Canterbury A and Canterbury B and came to the Club in 1983/84 after 17 years at Lancaster Park. He immediately immersed himself in Club activities as Coach, Club Captain and much else besides. The social scene drew him like a magnet. His accurate left armers still trouble batsmen in his fifties. Tony Collins – Came to Heathcote from Lancaster Park and has represented Canterbury. Tony was a punishing right-hand opener. Those who saw his 123 at the Domain out of a total of 322/7 will never forget it. This was in the one-day final of 1990/91 that Heathcote went on to win. Tony helped enormously with carpentry work on the Club’s extensions. In the 1991/92 season, Tony amassed 831 runs for an average of 49 and won the Suburban Association’s batting trophy for that year. Graeme Kench – Also came to Heathcote from Lancaster Park after a distinguished career as a wicketkeeper/batsman through the eighties. Went on to play for Canterbury A in a one day game, and also had a successful career with the Canterbury B team as well. Graeme played for the Senior team from 1995 to 1997 and captained the Senior A team in 1996 and 1997. Darrin Murray – Represented Canterbury and also New Zealand. Played only in Heathcote Senior one day games. Once carried his bat through an innings, hitting a six off the last ball to score a century and secure a Finals win. Brendan Murray – Played for East Shirley and represented Canterbury and came to Heathcote with his all-round skills intact. Did a stint as Clubrooms Manager and also as Senior Captain. Warren Cresswell – Played for Central Districts, including a match against Australia in which he bowled Kim Hughes. Came to the Club in 1984/85, helping Heathcote back to Senior A status. An accurate swing bowler who brought a distinct hard edge to the teams he played for. A degree of baldness and a social propensity were also in evidence. Michael Owens – Represented Canterbury and New Zealand as a fast bowler. During a time-out phase was persuaded to play fourth Grade for Heathcote, employing spin. Later joined the Seniors for the occasional match where his pace was of concern to the opposition. Mark Birchfield – Played for Heathcote for a number of years then moved to the West Coast. Represented the Coast but weather limitations caused him to return to Christchurch and the Club where he remains a Senior batsman. A great asset. Gary Walklin – At Heathcote during the seventies, previously played for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield era. Was coach and groundsman for Heathcote and went on to prepare test wickets at McLean Park in Napier. Phil Harris – Has carried out auditorial duties for the Club for many years, has represented New Zealand at Masters level in indoor cricket, as have Dave Erikson who is a current member. |
